Care and Cleaning your silver jewellery

Silver is a very resistant material and will last a lifetime! Your jewellery will age together with you. Scratches may occur, but no worries, they level out and form a beautiful patinated surface. The more you use your silver jewellery, the more beautiful it gets.

Silver discolour and that is due to sulfur that exists around us, in the air but also on the skin. When the silver is discoloured, it is called oxidation. The best protection against oxidation is to use your silver jewellery often.

Generally, you should avoid products with bleach and chlorine, those can harm your silver badly. But a dip in the pool and in the sea will not damage your silver jewellery, but be careful so you don't lose your jewellery in the water, it can be hard to find, and also be careful so you don't scratch your jewellery against stones.

We recommend that you store your MoM of Sweden jewellery in the box, separated from other jewellery, otherwise they can scratch one another. In the box from MoM of Sweden, there is a polishing cloth for protection and cleaning as well as a small textile bag. The jewellery bag is perfect to transport your silver jewellery when you travel

To prolong the life of your silver jewellery, and to keep it beautiful, we recommend you to polish and do some caring once in a while. Below we have listed some sustainable and environmentally friendly ways to care for your silver jewellery and we have picked products you regularly have at home, all to make it easy.

How do I clean my silver jewellery?

Things you have at home

Eco-friendly, fast and affordable cleaning of sterling silver, with products you have at home!

Baking powder and tin foil

  1. Add a sheet of aluminum- a tin foil in a bowl, with the shiny side up.
  2. Put the jewellery on top of the tin foil.
  3. Add one tablespoon of baking soda per silver jewellery.
  4. Add boiling water, you will notice some bubbling and a rotten-egg smell as the sulphuric gases released in the cleaning process.
  5. Move the jewellery around with a wooden or plastic utensil so all surfaces come in contact with the foil. Do not use a metal utensil as it can discolour or scratch. You will notice the jewellery becoming bright again. Sometimes it needs to soak for 10 minutes.
  6. Rinse the jewellery in tap water (put a sieve in the drain so you don’t lose anything).
  7. Polish with a soft cloth or paper so it does not scratch your jewellery, or use the cloth that came with your MoM of Sweden jewellery.

NOTE. Do not use baking soda to clean jewellery with an induced oxidised surface or parts, such as the black bottom of the Edge. The oxidisation will be damaged or disappear! Also, be careful with jewellery with stones. Try instead the below method with dish soap.

Dish soap- dish detergent

You can also use dish detergent for quick cleaning, dish soap is perfect for silver jewellery that is oxidised or jewellery with stones. Rub your silver jewellery with an old toothbrush and detergent, rinse underwater. Use a soft cloth to do some light polishing.

Toothpaste

Toothpaste is commonly used to polish jewellery. It does work on tarnish, but toothpaste can contain abrasives, so it can damage smooth shiny surfaces of jewellery. Try on a small piece if you are not sure. Brush clean with an old toothbrush.

 Ketchup

The acidic substances in ketchup react with the tarnish and eliminate it. Pour a small amount on a clean smooth cloth and rub the silver with it. Use extra effort where the piece is very tarnished. Then rinse the silver in water, and polish with the polishing cloth.

 Commercial cleaners for silver jewellery

If necessary, buy a commercial silver-cleaning product in a specialty shop, e.g., a jewellery store. read the instructions carefully.

 Love and Care for Leather

Leather does not like too much water. Washing your hands is fine, but avoid showers and baths with the leather bracelet on. Sometimes the leather wants a little extra care. You are best doing this by greasing the leather with leather fat or leather balm. Be sure that the products do not contain any chemicals or minerals as they tear out the stitches.
